Cleveland selected by Honeywell and Accelerator for America for the Honeywell Smart City Accelerator Program

10.12.22

Oct. 12, 2022 — Cleveland, OH — Earlier today, Honeywell and Accelerator for America announced the launch of the Honeywell Smart City Accelerator Program to help cities strategically plan their futures and build capacity to fund transformational initiatives. Cleveland is one of five U.S. cities that will receive in-kind support from the program to accelerate progress on their smart city strategic planning.

Through the Smart City Accelerator, Cleveland will receive technical support to develop a Smart City Strategic Plan. The strategic plan will align stakeholders, define priorities, and identify high-impact and inclusive initiatives that advance residents’ quality of life in areas such as climate resiliency, public safety, operational efficiency, and improved service delivery. Cleveland will also receive support in applying for federal grants to assist with implementation.

Cleveland was selected for the program through an application process that looked at leadership vision and data strategies and reviewed each city’s strategic plan, sustainability plan, climate plan, and operating and capital budgets.

“We are thrilled to be selected by Accelerator for America and Honeywell to participate in their Smart City Accelerator program,” said Mayor Justin M. Bibb, Mayor of Cleveland. “This initiative will help us improve the quality of life for our residents, better compete for resources, and bring government operations to the people as part of our vision to modernize City Hall.”

On September 21, The Honeywell team met with Mayor Bibb, Cleveland's Chief Innovation & Technology Officer Froilan Roy C. Fernando, and key leaders from IT, sustainability, public safety, workforce development, and law for a project kick off. Stakeholder interviews and information gathering to inform the project will be ongoing through December 2022.

Working closely with the administration and stakeholders, Honeywell is developing a four-part Smart City Strategic Plan that includes:

Smart City Vision: Identifies priorities and desired outcomes from a focused set of key stakeholders. It will include resiliency focused goals such as reducing operational costs, enhancing resident engagement, strengthening community resiliency, improving public safety and bridging the equity gap.

Operational Framework: Serves as a roadmap for managing and supporting smart city projects. It will help cities integrate new capabilities into current systems and processes, define associated KPIs and serve as an essential element for grant applications.

Project Definition: Defines high-impact projects and potential business models that can be implemented to achieve the goals defined in the vision, including program statements, recommended solutions, high level solution requirements and expected benefits.

Smart City Project Plan: Identifies tasks and processes to help guide cities through project implementation as well as define overall smart cities governance structures.

Other cities selected for the new program are Louisville, Ky., Kansas City, Mo., San Diego, and Waterloo, Iowa.
